The Immense Significance of Adhik Maas 2026
Adhik Maas in 2026 begins on Sunday, May 17 and concludes on Monday, June 15. It is a 30-day sacred period known as Adhik Jyeshtha, because the extra lunar month falls during the period of Jyeshtha (May-June). Adhik Maas is considered one of the holiest periods in Hinduism due to its immense spiritual importance and benefits.
What is Adhik Maas?
Adhik Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas/Mal Maas, is an extra month added to the Hindu lunar calendar approximately once every three years to reconcile the difference between the lunar and solar calendars.
In simple terms, the Adhik Maas meaning refers to an “extra lunar month” added to balance the lunar and solar calendars.
The Hindu lunar calendar (Panchang) is based on the cycles of the Moon and consists of approximately 354 days, whereas the solar calendar consists of about 365 days. This creates a gap of nearly 11 days every year.
When this gap accumulates over three years, it becomes approximately 32–33 days. Without adjustment, Hindu festivals would gradually shift away from their proper seasons. For example, Diwali could begin occurring much earlier than autumn, and Holi could shift away from the spring season toward winter.
To maintain alignment between the lunar calendar, solar calendar, and seasonal cycles, an additional month called Adhik Maas is inserted.
Spiritual Significance and Importance of Adhik Maas
The Adhik Maas importance in Hinduism is considered extremely high, as this holy month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
One of the greatest Adhik Maas benefits mentioned in the scriptures is the multiplication of spiritual merit earned through devotion, fasting, charity, and worship during this sacred month.

There is nothing equal to that which pleases Lord Purushottam. Those who observe the spiritual practices of Purushottam Maas are truly blessed and spiritually fulfilled; they have made their human life meaningful and successful.
Activities such as:
Vishnu Puja
Satyanarayan Katha
Vishnu Sahasranama chanting
Ekadashi fasting
Charity (Daan)
Japa, Tapasya and Sadhana
are considered extremely auspicious during this period.
Among all the days of this month, Adhik Maas Purnima (31st May 2026) is regarded as highly powerful, as the Vishnu Tattva is believed to be at its peak during this time. Performing the Satyanarayan Puja gives Akshaya Punya (ever-lasting results).
The Story of Adhik Maas and Why it is Dedicated to Lord Vishnu
According to the Padma Purana, the extra lunar month was once known as Mal Maas because it had no ruling deity and was considered neglected and inauspicious.
In a normal lunar month, the Sun transits from one zodiac sign to another, which is known as Surya Sankranti. However, during Adhik Maas, no Surya Sankranti occurs. Since there is no Sankranti, this month does not belong to any solar month or ruling deity. Because of this, it was considered ownerless and was rejected by all.
Feeling sorrowful and abandoned, the month approached Lord Vishnu and prayed:
“I have no place, no identity, and no one accepts me. I have come to you because I have nowhere else to go.”
Lord Vishnu, who has always shown compassion toward the rejected and forgotten, accepted the month immediately. He declared:
“You belong to me.”
He then gave it his own name i.e., Purushottam Maas.
“Purushottam” means the Supreme Divine Being or the highest form of God. Lord Vishnu himself said that spiritual practices performed during this month would yield exceptionally powerful results. Thus, the month once considered neglected became one of the holiest and most spiritually rewarding months in the Hindu calendar.

Significance of Performing Spiritual Activities During Adhik Maas
As Lord Shree Krishnan has said, a person is deprived of the fruitful results if he doesn’t perform spiritual acts in the month of Adhik Maas. According to Shree Krishna, Purushottam Maas is the month of clearing the misfortunes in one’s destiny, and if one spends the month doing no spiritual acts, he loses the opportunity to change his destiny.
In ordinary life, people remain occupied with worldly responsibilities. Adhik Maas serves as a sacred period for turning inward toward devotion and spiritual growth.
The Shastras describe this month as the giver of “invisible spiritual results.” It is believed that sincere devotion during this period can help reduce karmic burdens and strengthen one’s spiritual destiny.
Unmarried women who observe Purushottam Maas through worship, charity, and sacred baths are believed to be blessed with good fortune and an ideal life partner. Married women are believed to receive blessings for the long life and well-being of their husbands.
Even if you are suffering from the harmful effects of malefic planets in your birth chart, then there is no better month than Purushottam Maas to perform the remedies for them.
Lord Narayan says:
मानुषं जन्म सम्प्राप्य मासे श्रीपुरुषोत्तमे ।
स्नानदानादिकं न कुर्यात् दरिद्रः जन्मजन्मनि ॥
Meaning:
Having attained the rare human birth, one who performs sacred acts such as bathing, charity, and devotional activities during Shri Purushottam Maas is blessed with prosperity and spiritual merit across lifetimes.
According to Markandeya Muni:
अद्यष्टफलदा ये च ग्रहाः क्रूराः फलप्रदाः।
तद् दोषानां विनाशार्थं पुरुषोत्तमपूजनम्॥
अन्यमासे तु यत् पुण्यं
तस्माद् दशगुणं भवेत्॥
Meaning:
Those planets that are giving inauspicious or harsh results – such as Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu – can have their negative influences reduced through the worship of Lord Vishnu). The spiritual merit earned during Purushottam Maas becomes ten times greater than that earned during ordinary months.
Is Adhik Maas Good or Bad?
Many people wonder whether Adhik Maas is good or bad because certain auspicious worldly ceremonies are generally avoided during this month.
However, according to the Puranas and Vaishnav traditions, Adhik Maas is not bad or negative. In fact, it is considered one of the most spiritually powerful and sacred months dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
The restrictions during this month do not exist because the month is impure. Rather, Purushottam Maas is reserved for devotion, simplicity, self-discipline, selfless worship, and spiritual upliftment.
What to Avoid During Adhik Maas
According to texts such as the Padma Purana, Bhavishyottara Purana, Dharma Sindhu, and Nirnaya Sindhu, Purushottam Maas is reserved primarily for Nishkama Karma – selfless spiritual practices performed without worldly desires.
