Amavasya is not merely a physical cleansing, but a “Mahapunya” (greatly meritorious) period for karmic purification. When it is Mauni Amavasya, the result is equivalent to performing 1,000 Ashwamedha Yagyas.
Mauni Amavasya is such a powerful day that if you take a silent vow to break a bad habit, its power becomes immense.
Observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Magha month (Jan-Feb), it is especially known for silence (maun vrat), holy bathing, and daan-punya.
Mauni Amavasya Date 2027
Mauni Amavasya 2027 will be observed on 6 February (Saturday).
Amavasya Tithi begins: 7:05 PM, February 5
Amavasya Tithi ends: 9:25 PM, February 6
Significance of Maun (Silence) on Mauni Amavasya
In the Shastras, speech is considered the gross expression of the mind. When speech is restrained, thoughts automatically reduce. Those who observe Maun find that their sadhna becomes successful faster and they receive the blessings of their Ishta Dev. Hence, this is the best day for Mantra Siddhi.
When you observe Maun, you do not indulge in fights or arguments. It calms the mind and enhances the power of Sattva (purity).
As per the Padma Purana, if a person speaks or gossips while taking the holy bath, the spiritual merit of the act is lost.
Observing Maun on this day grants Muni Pad and higher spiritual elevation (Uchch Gati). It enhances clarity of understanding and deepens devotion to God, while naturally bestowing the merit of Tapasya.
When Naam Jaap, Tarpan, and Ganga Snan are performed in silence, this Amavasya becomes spiritually Siddh (fulfilled and perfected).
माघमासेऽमावास्यायां मौनव्रतपरायणः। गङ्गाजले स्नानमात्रात् सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते॥ Meaning: Whoever observes silence on Magha Amavasya and bathes in Ganga Jal becomes free from many sins and ultimately attains liberation.
How to Observe Mauni Amavasya Vrat
Wake up before sunrise and begin the day with purity and devotion. Bath with water mixed with Gangajal.
Chant mentally:
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Padma Purana states that Amavasya Snan removes Chandra-related mental impurities such as fear, confusion, and instability.
Take water in the right palm and take a silent Sankalp:-
Today, on Mauni Amavasya, I vow to observe silence for the purification of my mind, speech, and karma, and for appeasing my ancestors’ souls. I am observing Mauni Amavasya vrat and I will not speak until 7:30 today.
Without Sankalp, vrat becomes physical hardship.
With Sankalp, it becomes Tapasya.
First, offer Arghya to Surya Dev (the rising Sun). This is how the process of daan and punya should begin.
Perform Pitru Tarpan and light dhoop and diya in front of your ancestors’ photograph, remembering them with gratitude.
The greatest charity is Anna Daan. On this day, you should:
1- Feed cows
2- Offer food and water to birds
3- Feed street dogs
4- Place food for ants
This ensures Pitra Tripti (Appeasement of ancestors’ soul).
If possible, offer charity or food to a Brahmin. Donate food to the poor and needy according to your capacity.
Donate whatever you can- food grains, clothes, blankets, or essentials. You may also visit a temple or ashram and do Seva or Shram Daan, which is also considered a powerful form of charity.
In the evening, light a diya of til oil under a Peepal tree, remembering your ancestors with devotion and humility.
Maintain forgiveness in your heart, avoid speaking negatively about your ancestors, and keep your conduct pure.
Chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” during the day is highly beneficial for ancestral peace.
All daan-punya done on this day multiplies many times and becomes a means of karma cleansing. Every good deed performed today helps remove accumulated karmic burdens and brings lasting spiritual merit.
Why Mauni Amavasya Is the Most Powerful Day for Pitru Dosh Nivaran?
On this day, performing remedies frees one from Pitru Dosh. As per the scriptures, the souls of our ancestors visit Earth on this day, making it one of the best days to perform Pitru Puja.
Gangajal Tarpan on Mauni Amavasya, especially at Prayagraj Sangam, is considered very fruitful for the salvation of our Pitrus.
The Importance of Narayan Bali Yagya on Mauni Amavasya
माघमासेऽमावास्यायां यस्तु पितॄन् तर्पयेत्। गयाश्राद्धफलं तस्य लभते नात्र संशयः॥ This verse from the Skanda Purana (Vaishnava Khanda) states that performing Pitru Tarpan on the Amavasya of the Magha month gives the same Punya Phal as performing Shraddha at Gaya. Hence, Narayan Bali Yagya performed on this day becomes exceptionally fruitful and Akshaya.
Narayan Bali Yagya is one of the most powerful Vedic rituals for Pitru Dosh Nivaran, especially when performed on Mauni Amavasya.
Significance of Narayan Bali Yagya
1- Grants peace and liberation to ancestors
2- Helps in the removal of Pitru Dosh from the horoscope
3- Protects the family from ancestral karmic disturbances
4- Ensures overall peace and prosperity in the family

At YagyasDevam, Narayan Bali Yagya is performed strictly as per Shastric Vidhi by experienced Vedic priests.
1- Personalized Sankalpam taken for your ancestors
2- Complete Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan rituals
3- No physical presence required – divine energy through the Sankalp in your name reaches you wherever you are.
4- Sending of Prasad and Yagya photos and videos after the Yagya.
If you think you are suffering from Pitru Dosh, performing Narayan Bali Yagya on this day is extremely fruitful.
Conclusion
